Desenzano del Garda

Desenzano del Garda is one of the largest towns on Lake Garda’s shores. The importance of this town is also historical since its antique Roman origins have been confirmed. The ancient Roman road, the Via Emilia, in fact, passed through here, linking Verona and Brescia. Starting from the 1st century BC, the area of the Garda, including what is now Desenzano del Garda, became a favourite resort for rich families coming from Verona, then the main Roman city in north-eastern Italy. The city is a popular holiday destination in Southern Europe. It attracts a myriad of tourists from around the immediate area due to its beautiful view of the Alps on the southern shore of Lake Garda, its three large beaches (Desenzanino Beach, Spiagga D’oro Beach, and Porto Rivoltella Beach) and its 27 major hotels. Desenzano del Garda is the heart of night life of southern Garda Lake with several discos and pubs. In the summertime its main squares, Piazza Malvezzi and Piazza Matteotti are crowded all night by young and partying people. At the heart of the city is a series of interconnected piazze that house numerous open-air cafés, various shops, “gelaterie” (ice-cream parlors) and several bars.

Main sights: The Duomo, Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene, inside the Duomo is a painting of the Last Supper by Gianbattista Tiepolo. – The House of St. Angela Merici, founder of the monastic order “Orsoline” –  An archaeological museum (Museo Civico Archeologico Rambotti) – The Villa Romana, built between the 3rd and 5th century B.C. Restored starting from 1920, it features in excess of 200 sq.m. of mosaics showing scenes of fishing, hunting, grape harvesting and dancing, as well as pieces of frescoes – The Castle – The Tower of St. Martin (Torre di San Martino). In the battlefield where the Piemontese army defeated the Austrians, during the Second War of Italian Independence, it is possible to visit the tower that was erected at the end of the 19th century to celebrate the victory, a church and an ossuary.
